We are celebrating 41 years and going strong

Urdu promotion Board of Canada was established in 1976 by Masood Khan (Editor of the Eastern News) to promote Urdu language in Canada. In 1977 he started an Urdu language newspaper Messenger with another partner and after the newspaper was ceased to operate in March, 1979, he started the Eastern News back in June of 1979.

Eastern News is the first and the oldest regularly published Pakistani newspaper in the Country.

In 1995, friends of Eastern News felt an urgent need to recognize the growing population of the Urdu language writers and poets in Canada and suggested to the owners of the Eastern News to start Eastern News Awards.

For the past 18 years, Eastern News Awards (a plaque and some cash) are talk of the town. Management struck a committee of noted and celebrated Poets and Writers here in Canada to look for deserving candidates. The Committee advertises these awards and look for nomination from the public. One Award for Urdu literature and One Award for Urdu poetry is bestowed upon the most deserving candidate each year.
